Honorary Chairman, Senior Advisor, and Member of the Strategic Committee of the Board of Legend Holdings
Mr. Liu Chuanzhi is currently the Honorary Chairman, Senior Advisor, and Member of the Strategic Committee of the Board of Legend Holdings.
He was born in Zhenjiang City of Jiangsu Province in 1944, and graduated from the People's Liberation Army Institute of Telecommunication Engineering (currently Xidian University) in China in 1966. He was a representative of the 16th and 17th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and of the 9th, 10th and 11th National People’s Congress (NPC) of China. He was Vice Chairman of the 8th and 9th Executive Committee of All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce (ACFIC).
In 1984, Mr. Liu Chuanzhi, together with the other 10 researchers, set up Legend in a less-than-20-square-meter bungalow of the Computing Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Constantly aiming at higher goals, he led the company to embrace changes and explore new business.
As the founder and leader, Mr. Liu Chuanzhi has made a significant contribution to the company’s institutions and mechanisms, strategy development, business expansion, management and culture, and talents training. Under his leadership, the company has produced a number of achievements that guarantee its development in the long run.
Starting from IT Industry, promoting high-tech industrialization and information construction in China through own practice, and providing valuable experience for Chinese companies “going global”.
Under the leadership of Mr. Liu Chuanzhi, the company broke through the traditional concept that had imprisoned scientific researchers for a long time, accumulated funds to develop the proprietary PC and presented it to the market. Based on the domestic market of China, the company competed against multinational PC giants and prevailed, facilitating the proliferation of domestic IT companies, resulting in the ubiquitous PCs in China’s households and all walks of life, and laying a solid foundation for the information construction and rapid development of Internet in China today.
Mr. Liu Chuanzhi propelled the acquisition of IBM's global PC business, which enabled Lenovo to successfully enter the international arena, and he stepped down as Lenovo’s chairman at the same time. In February 2009, he returned to the chairmanship of Lenovo to help the company survive the toughest period after the global financial crisis. With the Lenovo management, he turned around the situation thoroughly and left his office again in 2011. Lenovo topped the world PC market in 2013.
Today, Lenovo has developed into an international leader in consumption, business and enterprise innovative technologies, and ranks 1st place in the global PC market.
Opening a new chapter of investment and supporting China’s real economy and start-ups through “Investment + Services”
In order to resist risks to guarantee stable and long-term growth while promoting technological innovation, Mr. Liu Chuanzhi led the company through the spin-off. The IT business was handed to the younger generation, and he continued leading Legend Holdings to a new growth period of diversified investment to realize our vision of serving our country by industrialization.
Legend Capital, Hony Capital and Legend Star were set up successively and a full investment chain was completed to cover the entire business cycle. In 2010, the company pioneered the strategic investments segment, started to explore new business opportunities and cultivated our own talent team. With the innovative two-wheel-drive model of “strategic investments + financial investments”, the present business deployment has taken its shape that covers both strategic and financial investments as well as the Chinese and overseas markets.
In December 2019, Mr. Liu Chuanzhi resigned as Chairman of Legend Holdings and began working as Honorary Chairman, Senior Advisor and Member of the Strategy Committee of the Board of Directors.

Mr. Liu Chuanzhi is fully aware of the significance of institutions and mechanisms in the long-term growth of a company. Supported by CAS, he designed and promoted the institutional reform of Legend and gradually built up a more scientific and market-oriented corporate governance. Both junior and senior employees’ productivity and creativity were mobilized, and a path of reform was paved for other high-tech companies and research institutes in China. He insisted on allocating shares to more employees at the first time so as to create a more harmonious atmosphere and a more united team.
Mr. Liu Chuanzhi attaches great importance to the summary of corporate management rules as well as the building-up of corporate culture. Based on the practice of Legend, he summarized and put forward the “Three Elements of Legend-style Leadership”, our core values of “put the company’s interest first and be pragmatic, enterprising and people-oriented”, as well as the methodology of “be strongly purpose-driven, adopt phased implementation and revisit the past”. These have not only played an important role in the past reforms of Legend, but have also become valuable assets for our further growth and provided good references to other companies.
Mr. Liu Chuanzhi keeps discovering and cultivating leaders and talents. He has devoted himself to building up platforms where young people with both integrity and ability become the captain of their own causes, unleash their talents and fulfill the ambitions, so as to contribute more to our country and society.
Enthusiastic about public welfare, upholding the values of integrity and honesty, and advocating business civilization
Mr. Liu Chuanzhi is enthusiastic about public welfare, advocates business civilization, and commits himself to the spirit of “be a good person, do good deeds, and set up a good example to society”, which is passed down from generation to generation in Legend.
Under his leadership, Legend Holdings incorporated public welfare into the company's development strategy in 2004 and carried out systematic planning and implementation, with current foci on supporting education, promoting social integrity, and encouraging entrepreneurship.
Since 2004, Legend Holdings has set up “Legend Progress Class” in Beijing, Guizhou, Sichuan, Gansu, Ningxia and other places, aiming to help students from poor families with excellent ethics and academic performance to complete their high school studies and enter their ideal universities. So far, it has helped thousands of students.
In 2004, Mr. Liu Chuanzhi and Legend Holdings launched a public charity fund – “Legend Special Fund for Heroic Models and Upholders of Justice in the Capital”, which is used to help heroes/heroines from the political and legal sector as well as the people or their families who have done brave deeds to uphold social justice, promoting social integrity through such a business activity.
Legend Star, founded in 2008, is committed to promoting the industrialization of scientific and technological achievements. After years of practices, it has explored an innovative and entrepreneurial incubation model of ‘public-welfare-based operation, seamless connection, relay-style cultivation, forward-looking deployment, and model-based output’, hence finding a new path to support innovation and entrepreneurship. In the past 11 years, legend Star has enrolled 988 people in its CEO Special Training Courses and conducted more than 350 entrepreneurial alliance activities with around 17,000 participants in total.
